Opening night of Suga & Soul was radiant. Hill Dance Academy Theatre has introduced Pittsburgh to a new holiday tradition that uplifts the spirit of the Hill District and honors its legacy through artistry and celebration. Written by Hill District native Kim El and directed by Debbie Blunden-Diggs, with music by Cliff Barnes, James Johnson III, and Carolyne Perteete, the production draws from community memory, ancestral presence, and the pull of returning home.
At the center of the story is Mia Stallworth, portrayed by the multi-talented Erika Durden. A 30-year-old dancer living in Brazil, Mia returns to Pittsburgh for Christmas after seven years away, drawn by family ties and holiday memories in the Hill District. What she finds instead is a neighborhood reshaped by time. Her favorite bakery is gone, familiar streets feel altered, and the place she longed for feels unfamiliar.
Miaβs return unfolds as an emotional, spiritual, and cultural journey. Guided by ancestral figures from past, present, and future, she moves through loss, reflection, and revelation. These encounters ground her in a deeper truth: restoration is shaped as much by inner discovery as by what we return to. Her path offers a resonant meditation on memory, heritage, and home.
The production places Hill District landmarks and history at the heart of the story. Expressive choreography blends contemporary movement with African diasporic influences drawn from Miaβs life in Brazil, while the music carries soul, warmth, and a rich storytelling lineage.
A standout feature is the multigenerational cast. Elders such as Etta Cox and Sheldon Ingram perform alongside youth and emerging artists like Marissa Lily, bringing humor, wisdom, and heart.
There is still time to experience this holiday production. Performances continue Saturday at 2 PM and 8 PM, and Sunday at 2 PM. Get tickets here: https://www.5678hdat.org/event-details/sugar-and-soul-2025-12-07-14-00
