Pipelining businesses for the Hill District’s commercial corridor.
Where culture, community, commerce, and innovation converge.

About the Initiative

The Hill Community Development Corporation (CDC) is excited to announce our newest initiative, HD Rising, which has been created to assist businesses and entrepreneurs in finding an available commercial, office, or retail space within the Hill District. As the Hill District is on the rise, businesses will have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of spaces that can be converted into commercial spaces, whether it be a boutique, restaurant, nonprofit, or traditional office.

HD Rising is focused on pipelining businesses that are interested in locating or staying in the Hill District. Businesses will have the ability to identify their needs and be connected to spaces that are tailored to their preferences and connected to resources.

Ideally situated between the two largest business districts in Pittsburgh, Oakland and Downtown, the Hill District presents an excellent opportunity for developers and businesses alike to be at the forefront of innovation in the heart of the cultural center of Pittsburgh’s African American community, as well as Centre Avenue, the east-to-west running spine of the city.

Marimba Milliones, Hill CDC president and CEO, discusses HD Rising.

HD Rising Overview

History of the Hill District: One of Pittsburgh’s Iconic Commerce Centers

The Hill District is one of Pittsburgh’s most historic communities, and since its earliest days, has served as a vital part of the city’s culture and economy. By the 1920’s, the Hill District had become an established African-American neighborhood and cultural center of the region. However, this rich cultural legacy was almost lost due to urban renewal and development plans of the past. To accommodate growth in the 1950s, the City of Pittsburgh, Urban Redevelopment Authority, and Pittsburgh’s esteemed and powerful corporate community pushed towards urban renewal that reshaped the landscape, causing rampant economic devastation. Over the years, the Hill CDC has worked diligently, with residents and many of the organizations involved in the neighborhood’s earlier decline, to return Centre Avenue as the true commercial core of the Hill District. Centre Avenue will be anchored by small and medium enterprises, with an acute focus on growing existing businesses and inviting new enterprises to join us in restoring the vibrancy of the Hill District’s commerce scene. Over the next seven years, the Hill District is slated for $2.5 billion in investment which will include Centre Avenue, the Lower Hill District Redevelopment and New Granada Square.

The Hill CDC continues to work towards facilitating development in the Hill District by leveraging and combining traditional market opportunities with community goals. The Greater Hill District Master Plan was created by Hill District residents and is a land use and quality of life plan. This neighborhood plan’s appendices include a set of Development Principles and Non-Displacement Strategies that affirmatively strive to preserve the African-American cultural legacy of the neighborhood while attracting investment and development. Throughout the Master Plan, there is an emphasis on revitalization through economic opportunity and to further provide support for our growing business district. So whether you are a large or small business, seeking affordable or market-rate space, or if you want to be a part of building something great together, this is the program for you! #HDRising.
